What is the iCARE™ Framework?
The iCARE™ Framework, developed by Dr. Michelle Boisvert and Dr. Nerissa Hall, is a practical guide designed to help Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and related professionals use technology thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively in their clinical work. It's a quick-reference model that ensures tech tools support—and never replace—your clinical judgment and goals for client-centered care.
Each letter in iCARE™ represents a key pillar:
I = Integrate
Blend your clinical expertise with an understanding of both the benefits and limitations of specific technologies. This step is about striking a balance—using your professional judgment to determine how technology can complement and enhance your therapeutic approach.
C = Critical Need
Select tools that directly address real challenges in your workload. This might include reducing administrative burden, improving documentation efficiency, or enhancing care quality. Technology should always serve a clear, meaningful purpose in your daily practice.
A = Assess
Ask yourself: Is this tool truly more effective than traditional methods? Regularly assess the impact of technology on your outcomes. By staying informed, you can make evidence-based decisions about whether a tool fits into your therapy approach—or not.
R = Refine
If a tool is helpful but not quite perfect, refine your use of it. Base adjustments on feedback, outcomes, and reflection. Flexibility is key: Small tweaks can make a big difference in making technology align with your goals for effective, client-centered care.
E = Evaluate
Continually evaluate whether the technology improves outcomes, efficiency, or care quality. If the answer is yes—great! You’ve identified a more effective process. If not, it may be time to reconsider or try another tool.
